ATTENTION PLAYERS!  ALL COURTS WILL BE UNAVAILABLE DURING THE HOURS OF 8:30AM UNTIL 4:30PM (APPROXIMATELY) OVER THE EASTER LONG WEEKEND (2-5 APRIL). THE 2010 ACT SENIORS TOURNAMENT IS BEING HELD AT THE WCTC

With the warmer weather and daylight savings there is no reason not to be having a hit! WC is well represented in Spring Pennants which are heading towards the finals. There are plenty of opportunities to play socially or competitively before the next pennant season start in 2010.

Lost Property:

Please note that at the end of every month, lost property  left in the clubhouse will be donated to the Salvation Army (hats, jumpers, etc) or placed in a recycling bin (drink bottles). Currently, items are stored in the clubhouse until collected. In many cases these items are never collected leaving the clubhouse untidy. Please remeber to take all of your gear home with you!

Congratulations to the Weston Creek Autumn Junior Boys Pennant team! Liam Gavran, Mwiga Kippaya and Patrick  Wielemborek defeated Forrest in a closely fought final. The final was tied at 3 sets all with Weston Creek winning 30 games to Forrest's 28. Photos of the boys can be viewed on the Photographs page under 2009 Pennant

A couple of reminders to club members and those who hire courts at Weston Creek:

  • Please keep an eye out for inappropriate use of the courts. There have been a number of people using the courts who are not club members and who have not hired the courts from the Weston Club. Players should be able to present their membership tag or keys from the Weston Club. In order to prevent this happening please be vigilant and try to keep the main gate closed as much as possible. We understand that at times during coaching and pennant this may not be possible.

Secondly, please make sure you lock the back room after use. Those who use the room should also be aware that it is not a place to store valuables as it frequently accessed.
Courts will be unavailable on the Easter long weekend due to the Veteran's tournament the club is hosting. All courts will be unavailable to both members and non-members between 8:30am and 6pm on the 10th to 13th April inclusive. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Imogen Clews Shines in Cowra at Weekend.

Ten year old Imogen Clews produced some impressive tennis at the weekend to be runner-up in the 12/u Singles and winner in the 12/u Mixed Doubles.  However, perhaps the highlight of her weekend was her performance against the No 2 seeded player in the 14/U competition in the quarter finals.  At one point down 7/4, Imogen fought back with to tie at 7 games all and force a tie-break. This she finally lost 7-4 but, by all accounts, the match was of a very high class.  Well done Imogen.

You can see photos of Imogen serving and displaying her prizes (hat and candle) by selecting photos from the menu.

2008 ACT Junior Open

The 2008 ACT Junior Open took place from the 23-27 April. Players from across the country competed with local entrants at the National Sports Club in Lyneham, with some matches also played at the Weston Creek tennis courts. It was great to see a number of Weston Creek players entered in the tournament. These included Amery and Imogen Clews, Paul Costigan, Daniel de Horatis, Alex Deutron, Jonathon and Thomas Dufty, Jordan Herbet, Tomas Hernandez,  Samantha Kariyawasm, Mwiga Kippaya, Hamish McKee, and William Vardos.

Australian Schools Tennis Championships: Perth 2008

This yearˇ¦s Pizzey Cup (Australian Schools Tennis) was held in Perth in early May.  For the second consecutive year, Weston Creek player, Samantha Kariyawasam, represented the ACT ˇV this time as female captain.

The seven dayˇ¦s tennis was played on the immaculate natural grass courts of the Alexander Park Tennis Club, Menora, in inner Perth.  The event was blessed with perfect weather for the entire week.

Although wins were few and far between for the ACT, the team played some impressive tennis throughout the competition.  The standard of tennis in general was high with some of Australiaˇ¦s finest young tennis players representing their states.

This was my fourth year as team manager and I continue to be impressed by the organization of the event and the quality of the young people who participate in it.  It is rare indeed to have 100 young people in one place for a week with so few problems.  I know that I and my co-manager, Kirsten Bedggood, were very impressed by the behaviour and attitude of our team members.

The week in Perth was not all tennis.  The withdrawal of the NT provided all teams a full day out on Wednesday.  This yearˇ¦s excursion was a ferry trip from Perth to Fremantle followed by a visit to the former Fremantle Prison and dinner at one of Perthˇ¦s most popular sea-side restaurants.

The trip to the Fremantle prison was a real eye-opener for all who attended.  It was quite a shock to view first hand the real world of prison life.  Fremantle prison was a fully functioning jail until the early nineties and I know I was left wondering how it was expected anyone could be rehabilitated in such an environment! The visit to the gallows ˇV last used in the execution of Eric Cooke in 1965 ˇV was a particularly salutary experience.

During the week, our team also managed to visit Kingˇ¦s Park ˇV always a must see when in Perth ˇV and Scarborough Beach.   Several of the more intrepid of our team decided to hire wetsuits and boogie boards and headed for the surf.  I preferred lunch in a near-by restaurant.

I am confident that all our team had a terrific week and, hopefully, it will be an experience they will remember for many years to come.

The Pizzey Cup will be on again next year ˇV probably Tassie.  Many of this yearˇ¦s team will be too old next year.  This will provide opportunities for many of our aspiring players who, having accepted they will probably never play Wimbledon, continue to aspire to represent the ACT one day.  To all those young people I say, get out and hit some balls!  Anything is possible.

 Graham Clews.
