Congratulations to the Weston Creek Autumn Junior Boys Pennant team! Liam Gavran, Mwiga Kippaya and Patrick Wielemborek defeated Forrest in a closely fought final. Congratulations to Imogen Clews who won the 12/u Forrest Tournament beating her opponent Shonal Dutt 9/0 and then partnered Jordan Hedington to win the 12/u Mixed Doubles. Well done to her brother, Amery who got knocked out in the semi-final of 14/u going down to the eventual winner, Elwyn Stannard, 9-3.
Imogen Clews Shines in Cowra at Weekend. Ten year old Imogen Clews produced some impressive tennis at the weekend to be runner-up in the 12/u Singles and winner in the 12/u Mixed Doubles. However, perhaps the highlight of her weekend was her performance against the No 2 seeded player in the 14/U competition in the quarter finals. At one point down 7/4, Imogen fought back with to tie at 7 games all and force a tie-break. This she finally lost 7-4 but, by all accounts, the match was of a very high class. Well done Imogen.

2008 ACT Junior Open The 2008 ACT Junior Open took place from the 23-27 April. Players from across the country competed with local entrants at the National Sports Club in Lyneham, with some matches also played at the Weston Creek tennis courts. It was great to see a number of Weston Creek players entered in the tournament. These included Amery and Imogen Clews, Paul Costigan, Daniel de Horatis, Alex Deutron, Jonathon and Thomas Dufty, Jordan Herbet, Tomas Hernandez, Samantha Kariyawasm, Mwiga Kippaya, Hamish McKee, and William Vardos.
Australian Schools Tennis Championships: Perth 2008 This yearˇ¦s Pizzey Cup (Australian Schools Tennis) was held in Perth in early May. For the second consecutive year, Weston Creek player, Samantha Kariyawasam, represented the ACT ˇV this time as female captain. The seven dayˇ¦s tennis was played on the immaculate natural grass courts of the Alexander Park Tennis Club, Menora, in inner Perth. The event was blessed with perfect weather for the entire week. Although wins were few and far between for the ACT, the team played some impressive tennis throughout the competition. The standard of tennis in general was high with some of Australiaˇ¦s finest young tennis players representing their states. This was my fourth year as team manager and I continue to be impressed by the organization of the event and the quality of the young people who participate in it. It is rare indeed to have 100 young people in one place for a week with so few problems. I know that I and my co-manager, Kirsten Bedggood, were very impressed by the behaviour and attitude of our team members. The week in Perth was not all tennis. The withdrawal of the NT provided all teams a full day out on Wednesday. This yearˇ¦s excursion was a ferry trip from Perth to Fremantle followed by a visit to the former Fremantle Prison and dinner at one of Perthˇ¦s most popular sea-side restaurants. The trip to the Fremantle prison was a real eye-opener for all who attended. It was quite a shock to view first hand the real world of prison life. Fremantle prison was a fully functioning jail until the early nineties and I know I was left wondering how it was expected anyone could be rehabilitated in such an environment! The visit to the gallows ˇV last used in the execution of Eric Cooke in 1965 ˇV was a particularly salutary experience. During the week, our team also managed to visit Kingˇ¦s Park ˇV always a must see when in Perth ˇV and Scarborough Beach. Several of the more intrepid of our team decided to hire wetsuits and boogie boards and headed for the surf. I preferred lunch in a near-by restaurant. I am confident that all our team had a terrific week and, hopefully, it will be an experience they will remember for many years to come. The Pizzey Cup will be on again next year ˇV probably Tassie. Many of this yearˇ¦s team will be too old next year. This will provide opportunities for many of our aspiring players who, having accepted they will probably never play Wimbledon, continue to aspire to represent the ACT one day. To all those young people I say, get out and hit some balls! Anything is possible. Graham Clews. THE WESTON CREEK JUNIOR OPEN IS ON THE 27/28TH OCTOBER. CLICK HERE FOR AN ENTRY FORM |
